What to Expect

You should begin your home study as soon as possible. During that time, your Adoption Coordinator will prepare the I-600a form to be signed by you and submitted to the BCIS (formerly INS). While both of those processes are underway, you should apply for your passport as soon as possible and begin working on your dossier. Your Adoption Coordinator will provide step-by-step instructions on how to compile the dossier and will do as much as the work herself as possible.

Once the home study is complete and a few of the documents have been created, those are sent to Russia where they are submitted to the Ministry of Education. A request for an appointment is made and once that date is issued, you will make your first trip (even if the other dossier documents are not yet completed.)

During the first trip, you will fly to Moscow, Russia and then take a domestic flight to either Krasnodar or Orenburg (you decide the region from which you wish to adopt.) You will then visit the Ministry of Education where you will either be granted permission to visit the child you have received a referral for or you may receive an invitation to visit the orphanage and meet children there. Once you find your child, you will then sign an Adoption Petition and return to the US. (Approximately 2-3 days, longer if desired.)

During the next few weeks, you will finish compiling your dossier. Your I-171h approval should have arrived from the BCIS at this point. Once all of the documents are ready in both the US and in Russia (4-6 weeks) you will then be granted a court date. Once you have that, you will return to Russia and attend the formal adoption hearing.

After the adoption is final, you may take your children back to your hotel with you. A Russian passport will be obtained for the children and the paperwork will be translated and notarized. Once you have that, you will return to Moscow for the US Embassy interview. (Total time is 8 days.) Upon completion of the Embassy interview, you will return to the US with your new family!
